Band Aid 30 – Do They Know It’s Christmas? (2014)

This week’s No 1 is Band Aid 30 – Do They Know It’s Christmas? (2014), pre-produced by Miloco partner Paul Epworth and Midge Ure at Miloco’s The Church Studios, and produced by Epworth and Ure at Sarm Studios.

Gotham ProducersMatt Wiggins mixed the song – which features Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, One Direction, Rita Ora, Bastille, and more – at Sarm Studios.

“The mix process started at Sarm, straight after all the individual’s parts were decided upon and the vocals had been arranged,” said Wiggins. “The instrumental part of the track was already in a good place after Paul had worked on it with Midge Ure at The Church in the weeks before, so it was a case of making space for the vocals, adding the new instrumentation, and getting a consistency between all of the vocal sounds.

“The calibre of artist on the record is so high that it was great fun recording everyone throughout the day. It was interesting to hear each vocalist’s interpretation of the song. The choir section was brilliant to record. Looking out into the studio, seeing everyone singing was an incredible moment.”

The charity single, organised for a fourth time by Bob Geldof, has sold over 312,000 copies in its first week to make it the fastest-selling single of 2014. All profits will go to the Band Aid trust in the fight against Ebola, and all partners involved have given their time and services for free.

The track was recorded and the video made all within 36 hours.
