Empress

Like many people around the UK, and the world, we have been following the career of Ray BLK since she burst onto our airwaves with her breakout single ‘My Hood’. It will come as no surprise then, that when the BBC Sound of 2017 winning artist was looking to record her debut album, Empress, we were thrilled to be involved.

Released on October 26 on Island Records UK, Empress is the first major label release for the singer-songwriter, who has previously released two EPs and a string of singles independently.

Bucking convention the short album has a sparse tracklist but, with Ray’s strong vocals and hard-hitting lyrics packing a powerful punch in its eight tracks there’s no need to pad out the album further.

The second last track, ‘Don’t Beg’ was recorded with us earlier in 2018 in Livingston 2. Miloco’s Chief Engineer Simon Todkill recorded the piano, guitar, Moog synths and the choir, who in Simon’s words were “insanely good”, in sessions with Ray and producer Nayla Nassa.
