German electronic music duo Digitalism have returned with their third studio LP, Mirage, released on Pias. The band formed in Hamburg in 2004 and spent a few years honing their sound before releasing their debut album Idealism in 2007. Their sophomore album I Love You Dude was released four years later in 2011, so the similar lengthy gap between albums two and three has come as little surprise to fans.
Digitalism, aka Jens “Jence” Moelle and İsmail “Isi” Tüfekç, are no strangers to Miloco’s studios, having worked in The Bunker, The Church, and the recently closed The Square studios with Miloco engineers and assistants Kristian Donaldson, Joseph Rodgers and Matt Wiggins.
Our own Matt Wiggins was heavily involved in the mixing of the album, taking the reigns on 13 of the album’s 15 album tracks. The duo joined Matt in The Church’s Studio 2 SSL room and Studio 3‘s writing room over a few weeks at the end of 2015 to get the record sounding just right. All tracks were mixed in the box, taking a bout two days per track, with an additional two days for recalls.
Mirage has been well received by critics and fans – many highlight the album’s energy and spirit as the defining feature, with the duo drawing on the sound and style of their earlier releases from over a decade ago. The instrumental tracks almost recall the nostalgia of early 90’s Nintendo games, their energy and repetition giving and air of suspense, while the vocal-heavy numbers add some variation and smooth pop melodies that connect with the listener.
Given the duo shine live settings, their imminent tour across Europe and the US can only give them more opportunity to strengthen the album’s reception. Click the button above to buy Mirage on iTunes, or stream on Spotify below.
