Highwater is a newly-built state-of-the-art, artist-owned recording studio complex on the River Thames in Deptford, London (6 minutes by train from London Bridge station). Studio A is a 55 sq m musical playground with plenty of natural light and for the first time is available to let as a versatile writing, production or mixing room.
Owners Anthony and Josephine (from the band Oh Wonder) designed the space to be used as their primary writing and production room. The studio consists of an 8.5 x 6.5m control room with an adjacent 1.3 x 1.4m booth. It is a truly creative studio to write in, and is set up so that all ideas can be born and realised within seconds. There is a dialled-in pre-amp for every instrument, pushing engineering onto the backseat and allowing the makers uninterrupted flow.
There is a plethora of instruments including a Steinway Model B grand piano, Yamaha U3 upright piano (with a beautiful felt rail), Wurlitzer, plus vintage synthesisers, drum kits, guitars, pedals and amps. Microphone highlights include a pair of vintage Neumann U87s, U67s and the studio's stunning Wunder U47 clone. The studio is home to a versatile range of incredible preamplifiers, including: Neve, Chandler, Shadow Hills, Focusrite, Heritage Audio, Phoenix Audio, and Universal Audio—not to mention an additional ten preamps in the Studer 92 console at the centre of the room.
The aesthetic is one of calm and understated luxury, with douglas fir flooring and ceiling, comfy sofas, custom walnut desks and beautiful lighting. There is a light-filled lobby space which serves as an inspiring space to gather thoughts and ideas. The studio is situated between the calming pond of Twinkle Park and the River Thames, which offers beautiful views across to the city. There is a cafe round the corner and the Dog and Bell pub is very close for a post-session drink.
