After three years since their last release, The Kooks’s new offering, Listen, is now out.
Surprising long-time fans with a new musical direction, the band have pulled out all the stops for their fourth album, with a helping hand from Hip-Hop producer Inflo, to channel new Gospel, Funk and Soul influences.
The album was recorded at various Miloco Studios, including The Pool and was engineering by Miloco’s Joseph Rodgers.

The never-ending sweep of our studio spotlight today lands in the English West Midlands where at Birmingham’s Summerfield Recording Studios there have been plenty of exciting equipment additions, with plenty more on the way too!
Summerfield has announced these numerous upgrades in a joint collaboration with Musical Director Marcus Byrne. A new Pro Tools HD Thunderbolt system and Mac Pro are in addition to a substantial list of gear installed as a fixture brought in by Marcus who will be moving all his projects to the studio as a permanent base. The complete list of Summerfield Studios’ new gear can be viewed at the top of its equipment spec here, but some of the highlights include outboard from Avalon, DBX, Eventide and Focusrite; microphones by Neumann, AKG, Rode and more; and lots of great synths, guitars, amps and other backline.
Currently tracking and mixing at the studio for The Saturdays Greatest Hits Tour, Marcus reveals how the simple interfacing is a real game changer. “I can bring in projects on my MacBook Pro and with Thunderbolt connection, I can be in full control of the studios 48 analogue Pro Tools I/O, the console and all the outboard with just 1 thunderbolt cable. All my patches, samples, plugs and projects all in one place”.

It’s the second great new residential recording studio we’re presenting to you this month! Blue Bell Hill is the home of acclaimed Producer and Engineer Barny Barnicott and is found in the beautiful English countryside in Kent. Whatsmore is that bands in London can get here really easily – around an hour by both car and train/taxi – and its superbly competitive rates are making it an increasingly popular choice for bands wanting quiet, residential recording that is both easily accessible and very affordable.
Blue Bell Hill recording studio is based in a large country house on the outskirts of Bluebell Hill Village, which is just 10 minutes from the major Kentish town of Maidstone. In the last few years Barny has significantly extended this building in order for the Blue Bell to grow from being a smallish mix room into a large, light, spacious and impressively equipped residential recording studio for bands to thrive in.
The 96 Channel SSL console that sits in the heart of the control room was purchased from the now-closed Eden Studios is joined by Avid Pro Tools 10 HD, a good choice of monitors and some outboard. The control room’s attractive skylights let in plenty of that warm, countryside sunshine as do the windows that look through to the large live space next door. Here you’ll find Barny’s brilliant collections of microphones and backline gear, as well as the entrance to a 10 sq meter booth that can double up as a programming room. This August Miloco is delighted to launch a brand new studio in a brand new country, and what a studio it is. The Agafay Studio is owned by Abel Damoussi and based in the sizzling cultural hub of central Marrakech. Located in the Medina, Marrakech’s old and historic district, this is a truly inspirational retreat for musicians and songwriters seeking a totally new and refreshing creative environment to write a record in.
Agafay has been built within a 15th century riad (a traditional Moroccan house) which has a completely modernised interior to provide a luxurious standard of living. Authentic Moroccan features are plentiful, with a courtyard and fountain, tiled mosaics, lanterns, rugs and carpets all sourced from the region. Clients have the option to rent a beautiful 6-bedroom apartment in the same building as the studio. The views of the Medina are breathtaking from some of the balconies, plus you’ll be treated to delicious Moroccan cuisine during your stay.
The studio itself has had the approval of leading UK acoustician Nick Whitaker. The spec includes a SSL Nucleus Controller, Avid Pro Tools 10, Neumann microphones, Adams speakers and more. You are then invited to fill it with your own instruments with which to pen some hits!
But what really sets Agafay apart from the rest is the location. The Marrakech Medina is home to the world famous Jamaa El Fna Square which is bursting with life night and day. This summer we have a really exciting long-term let studio development opportunity becoming available at Livingston Studios in Wood Green. The complex has a large first floor area, currently used as storage, which we are looking to develop into a long-term let facility that will have a number of different room combinations and layouts. The new studio facilities will benefit from natural light and high ceilings. If you are a label, production company or other entity looking for your own private studio facility then this might be the perfect chance for you to claim one!
To build the rooms we are looking for an 18 month rent down payment from prospective tenants. In return your will get the rooms built to your own specification and secure a long tenure on the space.

The track was engineered by Miloco’s Matt Wiggins and produced by Paul Epworth at his new venture The Church in North London.

The Miloco Builds team have completed yet another brilliant new studio, this time for Anjunabeats act, Above and Beyond. The band approached the team last year with an idea for a new build close to the Anjunabeats/Anjunadeep label in Bermondsey, which they also own.
The studio design and acoustic treatment was worked on with leading acoustic expert Nick Whitaker. Miloco Builds constructed the space, where achieving excellent sound reinforcement was essential due to nearby neighbours. The work included floating a new concrete floor across the entire basement, and carefully decoupling each area so that the main control room could work independently from the vocal booth / Studio 2 from where the band broadcast their radio show. The results speak for themselves.
