1) The guys at Retreat have installed four EMI REDD series style vintage valve pre amplifier: two of which are much like the V72s included in the early REDD mixing desks; the other two are like the REDD.47 modules which EMI engineers subsequently built themselves.
2) They have installed a Heritage Audio 1073 DMP, a high quality clone of the original 1073 modules (with 3 input stages) in a stereo module (2 channels).
3) Next up is the inclusion of an oak desk resulting in more rack space to be able to house new equipment and generally make the control room more ergonomic and space-efficient.
4) Lastly, The Retreat now features Mitsubishi inverter air-conditioning in the control room and second live room, which is super quiet. Just in time for those summer sessions by the sea…

Following on from yesterday’s blog on The Church 1, the second room to open at the reborn Church complex in North London is The Church Studio 3 – the “Stanley Kubrick” writing studio. This was always going to be a special writing room to cater for owner Paul Epworth’s projects, and the even better news is that the room is available for you to book too.
There is some great equipment based at Church 3, such a Shadow Hills Industries The Equinox and 20 channel Neve Sidecar; a collection of EQs, Mic Pre’s and Compressors; a Yamaha Electric Piano; and Avid HDX 2 running Pro Tools 10 HD loaded with an endless list of plug-ins. This is a brilliant setup for songwriters alone, but on top of the studio’s permanent gear is a huge collection of instruments in The Church’s other two studios. Please call to check on availability.
The studio was designed by New York’s WSDG design group and constructed by Miloco Builds who followed the masterful designs of John Storyk. Church 3’s control room and booth are stylish and modern with white surfaces and panels, and pinewood flooring. Then there is the state-of-the-art lighting system that offers clients the chance to set the mood with a large number of ambient shades – fiery red, mellow blue, and any number of other… the choice is yours. In the day hours the enjoys natural light through two floor-to-ceiling arch windows.
There is a great vibrancy throughout the building thanks to the other two commercial studios onsite, which bands, artists and producers have thrived off for over the course of this famous studio’s history. Throw in a attractive North London postcode with the many restaurants, pubs and cafes of Crouch End and The Church Studio 3 may just be the ideal choice for your projects.

Posted in Uncategorized | Tagged crouch end, london, Paul Epworth, recording studio, studio 3, the church |Alongside leading UK Producer Paul Epworth we are delighted to announce the relaunch of the famous Church Studios in Crouch End, North London. This legendary recording studio is now entering a brand new era under Paul’s ownership and Miloco’s management.
The first of three recording studios opening at The Church this year is The Church Studio 1, an epic tracking room with huge floorspace and ceiling height, an incredible equipment spec and tonnes of inspiration. At the centre of the room is a 72 channel vintage EMI Neve console, one of the rarest recording and mixing desks in the world and the only one of its kind in London. The desk is made up from two halves. The first lived in Abbey Road where it recorded legendary albums such as Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. The second used to live in Paris’s Pathe Marconi studios. The size of the console alone is a sight to behold, but the quality it produces is something else; a vintage Neve warmth unrivalled by most other boards.
The Church 1’s enormous main room occupies the old church hall with its towering ceiling, original church windows, wooden beams and other furnishings. The sound of the room alone is immense, but there are a number of panels, screens and cupboards you can use for other acoustic options. One of the old church booths has been converted into a large recording booth which can accommodate drums, and there are a number of interesting spots around the building that can be put to use, for example the church spire which makes an ideal echo chamber.
The design of Studio 1 accommodates a ‘no-bars’ recording experience with the Neve based in the live recording room with the band. The idea behind this is to push a session’s creative energy to the max. The studio’s original control room is used as an editing suite.
And then, the gear! The equipment spec in Studio 1 is astounding. Its range of microphones, guitars, bass guitars, amps, vintage keyboards and other esoteric toys is enormous, as is the collection of outboard.
Please join us in welcoming back The Church…
