Miloco client, singer-songwriter Sam Smith, won the Critics’ Choice Award last night and is due to be presented with the accolade at 2014’s BRIT Nominations on January 9th.
Open to artists who are due to release debut albums in 2014, 21 year old Sam Smith already has a string of successes under his belt, having sung on Naughty Boy’s number one single, La La La, and performed with Mercury Nominees Disclosure on their track, Latch.
Signed to Capitol Records, Smith was up against a strong shortlist of artists, including Chlöe Howl and Ella Eyre. Grabbing first place, he is set to release his debut single, Money On My Mind, in February 2014 and the album expected in Spring.
Sam has recently been working in Miloco’s Assault and Battery 2 studio in North London.

Last week we were very excited to see the 2014 Music Producers Guild (MPG) Awards shortlists revealed, and what a showing we have here at Miloco! The studios have been involved in no less than eight nominations across a number of different categories, which signals a brilliant year of music-making we’ve had in 2013.
First up, a hugely deserved shout for UK Producer of the Year for the esteemed pairing of Flood and Alan Moulder, who of course produced Foals’ Mercury-nominated Holy Fire. The album, which was recorded in Assault and Battery 2 and mixed in Assault and Battery 1, has gone from strength-to-strength since its release earlier in the year, and has been the catalyst for many Miloco-related nominations at the forthcoming MPGs. Flood and Alan are also in the running for Mix Engineer of The Year due to their staggeringly good mixes on Holy Fire; engineer Catherine Marks has doubled her chances of success by being nominated for both Recording Engineer of the Year and Breakthrough Engineer of the Year; while the album itself has been nominated for UK Album of the Year and UK Single Song Release of the Year for the track ‘My Number’. A massive congratulations to Foals, Flood, Alan and Catherine and best of luck to you all on the night.
This year has also been a huge one for engineer Matt Wiggins, who we represent on the Gotham Producers roster. Over the past 12 months, Matt’s excellent work with producer Paul Epworth has elevated him to the status as one of the UK’s most in-demand young engineers, and this has been recognised by a nomination for the Breakthrough Engineer of the Year award. Along with many other Epworth productions, including material from Paul McCartney’s New album, Matt was of course on recording duties for Adele’s Oscar-winning single, ‘Skyfall’, which will be hoping for yet more success in the MPG UK Single Song Release of the Year category.
Lastly, on the studio front if we were voting we would go for RAK Studios for the UK Studio of the Year award – an amazing studio with years of heritage that has recorded hit after hit. The other studios are great too but we would love to see RAK win it this year. Just saying!
That’s that. Over to the judges! Best of luck to all the nominees on the night, and we’ll look forward to seeing you all on February 13.

The EP features their lead single, Care, which was written at Miloco’s Osea Island and recorded at The Pool. They enjoyed their time there so much, it led to them naming the EP after their experience on the island.

It is based in Clapham, south west London, and is run by producer/engineer Ben “Steamy” Williams. This brand new partnership with Miloco sees us enter the south west of London for the very first time.
Ilkatron features a wonderful 32-channel vintage Sphere Eclipse C console, which has recently been lovingly restored. The studio is perfectly laid out for bands looking to record together, with a 350 sq ft live room, a large booth and a room for isolating amps. It offers a great collection of classic mics, outboard, and backline and also includes a state-of-the-art Pro Tools|HDX system with a substantial selection of plug-ins. The equipment spec has been carefully devised to accommodate the simultaneous set up of all the studio’s instruments, so that everything can be ready to record at a moment’s notice.
The building, which was once part of Joe’s Garage Recording Studios, comes steeped in history. In the ’90s it played host to Boy George, Ian Dury, Bob Geldof, Stereo MCs, Right Said Fred, The Orb and David Byrne. The studio’s previous occupants, Morcheeba, produced six albums during their time here in the late ’90s and 2000s.
