Soho Sound Kitchen is a brand new 5.1 SSL recording and mix studio in King’s Cross, London, having recently moved from a previous site in Soho.
This state-of-the-art facility was setup up by producer/engineer Goetz Botzenhardt (Dido, Faithless, Sugababes, Pet Shop Boys) and music composer Christian Henson, and was designed and built by Munro Acoustics. The room also boasts a large selection of top end outboard.
For recording purposes there is a 200 sq ft live room that is great for recording and overdubbing. It has a good collection of microphones and can accommodate a rhythm section and ensembles of up to six string players.
Soho Sound Kitchen also benefits from a prime location. You can reach the exciting new Kings Cross development from the tube station in less than ten minutes on foot, and the popular areas of Camden and Islington are also nearby.

The multi-instrumentalist, one half of Cat’s Eyes (with The Horrors’ Faris Badwan) and who also musical associations with psychedelic bands TOY and S.C.U.M., has released her debut solo record, The Deserters; a beautifully melodic and wintery collection of tracks. Lead guitarist Zach Filkins gave this interview to Crave Online, where he discusses the new record, the recording sessions, Black Rock studios and more…
“… we’ve been in studios where you almost write an entire song right there because… something is (just) there. We worked in Santorini, which is this really beautiful island off the coast of Greece. We went there for an actual band vacation that Twiddy offered us, something we hadn’t done in a long time. But there’s this studio in Santorini that’s super beautiful, and it was a really laid back experience to have a studio available to us in such an amazing setting.
Most of all, we’re chasing inspiration. And you can’t always find the inspiration you need from one studio or one location.”

The guys set up fort for three months at our Assault and Battery Studios to record and mix the album. ‘Holy Fire’ is produced by Flood and Moulder, engineered by Catherine Marks and mixed by Moulder in Assault and Battery 1.
‘Inhaler’ is the first single from the album and you can listen and watch here:
This single is just a hint of what to expect, taking on a rockier, heavier approach to there previous work which had that ‘Foals’ math-indie, post punk signature penned all over it. This record is the unveiling of a new Foals and see’s the band take their first step away from being ‘that indie band from Oxford’. Their new work is current, on point and big, we’re looking forward to seeing this live!

With Ben Phillips, the studio’s owner, engineering throughout the time Newton spent there.
Newton told the NME “I have had such a good time making this record, whether it’s been in my studio in the middle of night when I can’t sleep or in Sam Farrar’s garage in LA or on Lightship95, which is a boat and I think might be my favourite studio in the world.”
The album was released back in July, but with the cold winter nights setting in, its the perfect accompaniment for a relaxed evening in by the fire.
