It’s December, therefore exorbitant numbers of journalists, bloggers and pub philosophers are separating this year’s worthwhile records from the woeful ones. Here is one list which will rightly spark a fruitful debate or two, the NME Track of the Year. So it comes with much glee to announce that a 100% Miloco-made track has scaled higher than any other up the taste-making walls of Britain’s favourite music weekly to grab the title for 2010.
Foals’ ‘Spanish Sahara’, from the Mercury-nominated album Total Life Forever, was recorded in Assault & Battery 2 by Daniel Rejmer, and mixed in Assault & Battery 1 by Alan Moulder. It saw off stiff competition from Grinderman’s ‘Heathen Child’ (also recorded in Assault & Battery 2), Arcade Fire’s ‘We Used To Wait’ and Gorillaz’s ‘Stylo’.
The NME’s Luke Lewis describes his admiration for the song: “‘Spanish Sahara’ is subtle, mysterious, cryptic – it creates a filmic world of its own that you want to crawl inside.”
The Top 10 tracks of 2010 as voted by the NME are:
1. Foals – Spanish Sahara
2. MIA – XXXO
3. Janelle Monae – Tightrope
4. Kanye West – Power
5. Arcade Fire – We Used To Wait
6. Gorillaz – Stylo
7. Surfer Blood – Swim (To Reach The End)
8. Grinderman – Heathen Child
9. Zola Jesus – Night
10. The Fall – Bury Pts 2+4
The nominees for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on 13th February 2011 have been announced, and Miloco are thrilled to reveal that 5 of our clients are in amongst the shortlisted few for some of the top awards on the night.
With a staggering 109 different award categories, it is safe to say that the world’s most famous Music Awards Ceremony is certainly one of the longest too. It also contains some of the lengthiest and most mouth-filling categories you could think of; alas, Miloco representatives in the ‘Best Zydeco Or Cajun Music Album‘ there are not. However, here’s what we can boast about this time around…
Our friend and business partner at The Garden Studios in Shoreditch, Craig Silvey, heads the list of Miloco Grammy Nominees, for his work mixing the Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. The Canadian band’s magnificent third album is gunning for three of the big gongs in February: ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ and ‘Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals’ for track ‘Ready To Start’.
Miloco have two clients nominated for the ‘Best New Artist’ award. The first is Florence and the Machine, whose Miloco-made debut album Lungs stormed both sides of the Atlantic throughout 2009/2010. Mumford & Sons, whose debut album Sigh No More was partly-recorded with us, will be going head-to-head with Florence & co.
The Recording Academy have paid tribute to the exceptional return of Sade, whose album Soldier of Love, which was recorded at Miloco’s El Cortijo, is shortlisted for the ‘Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocals’. Lastly, past winners The Chemical Brothers will be looking to expand on their collection of Golden Gramophones having been voted for ‘Best Electronic/Dance Album’ for 2010’s Further, which was mixed in Miloco’s Engine Room by Steve ‘Dub’ Jones.
We wish all nominees the best of luck on the night!!

You’ll be excited to hear that we have purchased a new Focusrite ISA428 MkII for The Bridge Studio in London, SE1.
The ISA428 MkII is new to Focusrite’s renowned ISA range of pro audio hardware. It is a premium four-channel mic preamp supporting an optional eight-channel A-D converter.
The ISA428 MkII features four of Focusrite’s classic ISA preamps, originally developed for the legendary Forté console. It supports the same professional eight-channel A-D converter option used with the ISA828. The A-D converter accepts four line inputs in addition to the signals passing through the main channels of the ISA428 MkII, creating eight high-quality digital streams with a superb 122dB dynamic range. Thanks to its convenient 25-pin D-Type connector, the A-D converter option integrates seamlessly with most digital workstations, including Pro Tools HD.
Mirroring the feature set of the original, each ISA428 MkII channel has a variable impedance circuit allowing you to perfectly match the preamp with any microphone, or to use different settings creatively to shape the sound of the microphone. Adjustable high-pass filters as well as phantom power and phase reverse controls are easily accessible on the front panel.

The band are giving away an MP3 and video of their new record ‘Palace In Flames’, to people who buy a S.O.P.H.I.E. wristband, with all profits going to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
The foundation was set up after the tragic murder of Sophie Lancaster in 2007, after she was attacked by a group of youths provoked by their prejudice towards Sophie’s, and boyfriend Robert Maltby’s alternative fashion sense.
Set up by Sylvia Lancaster, Sophie’s mother, the aims and objectives of the Charity are as follows:
• To create a lasting legacy to Sophie.
• To provide educational group-works that will challenge the prejudice and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures.
• To campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from “alternative subcultures” or “Lifestyle and Dress”.

The Libertine and former Dirty Pretty Things frontman takes a new angle on his new material, moving away from the quintessential indie rock of his previous bands to a more complex singer-songwriter feel with plenty of strings brass arrangements.
Carl Barat was recorded in The Square in 2010 by producer Leo Abrahams and Interface engineer Oliver Wright.
