With this breathtaking mountain range on your doorstep, you should take the time to take a walk across the beautiful peaks and valleys of the Sierra Nevada. There are a number of popular walking paths in the National Park that you can view by clicking the link above.
The Albuñuelas weekly street market is held every Thursday morning in the main square in front of the Town Hall in the Upper Barrio. It is not huge, but there are stalls selling vegetables, spices, household items, clothes, shoes and usually roast chickens. There is a much larger street market in the town of Dúrcal every Wednesday morning. There is a bootsale in Almuñecar on the coast every Sunday morning and another in Salobreña the first Saturday of the month.
The Alhambra palace and fortress is one of the most famous buildings in Andalucia. Located in the nearby city of Granada, its first historical references arose during the war between the Arabs and Muladies in the 800s, and it has been occupied by Moors, Arabs and Christian rulers since. It has been developed into a complex over the centuries which incorporates a Renaissance palace, Muslim court and Moorish fortress. Today it is a museum exhibiting Islamic architecture tthat has influenced many 19th and 20th century interpretations of the building.
One of the nicest places to eat in the valley is Los Naranjos. There is a pleasant shaded terrace with good views of the surroundings, where you can indulge in the menu del dia on weekday lunchtimes. The restaurant is open all day every day except Wednesdays and gets very busy at the weekends.
El Meson Tres Lindes is the only real restaurant in Albuñuelas. There is an open fire which makes it the cosiest place to hang out in the winter. The bar serves coffees, drinks and tapas all day and there is a good basic menu served at both lunch and dinner. Lunch in Spain is usually served from 2pm.
This bar/cafeteria is open all day every day except Mondays. They are renowned for their great coffee, excellent tapas, sandwiches, burgers etc. A wide screen TV shows most big matches, and there is also a pool table. A lovely terrace features refreshing sprinklers for those sultry summer nights.
