An interview with producer Ben Hillier. Ben gives an insight into the ongoing development of The Pool

As part of The Pool’s relaunch, we asked Ben a series of questions on both the studio and his recent activities as a producer. Since the last time we interviewed Ben in 2007, the Pool has been through a major transformation, and now of course has a massive new injection of analogue gear thanks to Johan’s arrival. Ben has also worked with everyone from Depeche Mode to Graham Coxon in that time, as well as a selection of new bands and artists such as Beth Jeans Houghton, Dennis Hopper Choppers, Nadine Shah and Plugs. As such, we all agreed it was high time to reconvene.

This month we’re ushering in a brand new era at our ever-evolving tracking studio, The Pool, in London SE1. The Pool’s longstanding partnership between Miloco and producer Ben Hillier is thrilled to now welcome on board Johan Ekelund, producer and co-founder of the Kobalt Music Group, and a selection of his enormous shipment of rare outboard equipment.

This new £80,000 investment in gear means that The Pool now rivals the most famous studios in the UK. It now provides over 50 Mic Pres and EQs, a collection highlighted by 18 vintage Neve Preamps; 9 x 1079s and 9 x 1272s, in addition to two Telefunken V76/80 preamps.

Here are the new EQ’s on offer. We have 2 x API 550s, 2 x API 550As and 2 x API 560Bs. Then there’s the NTI EQ3, 2 x Lang PEQ-2As, Pultec HLF-3C and MEQ-5.

We have 9 new Compressors: 2 x Neve 2254/As, Urei 1176 & 1176LN, and Altec 436C, Universal Audio 175-B and 2 x API 525As, and have heavily enhanced the selection of Delays and Reverbs too, with a Fairchild Reverberation II Model 659 & 659A, Ursa Major Space Station SST-282, AMS RMX16, EMT 244 and Lexicon Super Prime Time. Last but not least, a Moog 12 Stage Phaser MKPH processor is also now on the spec.

As far as tracking rooms go The Pool now has pretty much everything. Johan’s contribution joins that already provided by Ben; a vast collection of esoteric gear in its own right. This world-class spec lives in a studio boasting a huge live area, control room and drum booth, all of which are designed for maximum sound quality and vibe…

Call Collector Studio Files: 4 Entertaining Episodes from Miloco’s London HQ

Posted on September 13, 2011 by ether

call collector studio files rock-u-mentary

Australian rockers Call Collector set up camp in our Engine Room studio earlier this summer. We were very pleased to have this exciting band and great bunch of guys over for a few weeks at our HQ at Leroy Street, London. We wish them all the best for when their debut album, which they were mixing at the time, is released.

During their stay they filmed a 4-episode Studio Files series: 3 documenting the actual session, and one spoof retrospective ‘rock-u-mentary’ which featured the recently-discovered (much to our delightful surprise) acting talents of three of our assistant engineers: Mark Allaway, Jake Gordon and Joseph Rodgers.

So thank you to Call Collector for their time at Miloco, and for the laughs they’ve given us since with the ‘Call Collector Studio Files’!!

Congratulations to PJ Harvey, Flood, John Parish and Mick Harvey on their Mercury Prize Success!

Posted on September 7, 2011 by ether

PJ Harvey let england shake album cover

So another fantastic Mercury Music Prize ceremony has passed, and we’re thrilled to be able to congratulate PJ Harvey and her co-producers Flood, John Parish and Mick Harvey on scooping the highly-coveted award for 2011, for their work on PJ’s eighth studio album, Let England Shake, which was also mixed by Flood in Miloco’s Assault & Battery 1 studio.

PJ Harvey is now the most successful artist in the history of the Mercury, which has been running since 1992, with four Mercury nominations and two wins, the first being in 2001 for her seminal Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. That year, when the ceremony was held on the same day as the 9/11 attacks, she was in America and so not present.

During last night’s acceptance speech she said, “It’s really good to be here this evening, because when I last won 10 years ago I was in Washington DC watching the Pentagon burning from my hotel window. So much has happened since then. This album took me a long time to write. It was very important to me. I wanted to make something meaningful, not just for myself but for other people, and hopefully to make something that would last.”

During the making of Let England Shake, PJ was heavily inspired by the horrors of war, and spent much time researching testimonials given by civilians and soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade. The album won by unanimous vote by the panel of Mercury judges.

So please join us in raising a glass to PJ and the team, for a richly-deserved second success at the Mercury. We’d also like to congratulate all the other nominees for their fantastic albums and performances on the night.
