Public Service Broadcasting tracked drums, brass and strings at Miloco’s The Pool for the London-based duo’s second album ‘The Race For Space’.
PSB tracked two drum kits at The Pool – the Slingerland and the Premier – for the USA and USSR tracks respectively.
PSB also tracked a six-piece brass section for ‘Gagarin’ and five-piece strings for a few tracks. A lot of the sound for the brass and strings came from a medium-range pair of Coles mics. And for the Premier kit, which was set up in the drum booth, a great deal came from a Neumann fet 47 mic set up in the main room.

Grammy award-winning producer, engineer and mixer Matt Lawrence, who does much of his work at Miloco’s studios, has given advice on how to get the most out of a recording session.
With a career that’s seen him working with the likes of Adele, Mumford & Sons, Foals and Amy Winehouse, Matt knows his stuff.

After his cancer was diagnosed last year, Henry was keen that his condition should remain private and, as was his way, he didn’t want to concern people with his health. Henry had tremendous support from his wife MJ and children, who have been helping him through his treatments. It is to them that our heartfelt condolences are sent.
Henry founded Milo just over 30 years ago as a one-studio operation in Hoxton Square, built in partnership with John Deacon, the bass player from Queen who he was touring with at the time. The name Milo was coined from Milo Minderbinder from Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, whose wheeling and dealing was very much reflected in Miloco’s spirit. In those formative years Henry expanded Milo by building a second demo studio and then several long-term let dry hire studios in a separate building in Hoxton Market.
While Milo grew, Henry continued his life on the road as a tour/production manager working for acts such as Queen, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Madonna. He became a specialist in South America, which suited his “can-do” attitude, and he was always called upon whenever tours headed down to that part of the world. There is hardly a stadium in the world that he didn’t visit, and he became an exceptional talent at building stages quickly and effortlessly. From around 2006, Henry began working exclusively for Elton John Touring until he retired at the end of 2013.
In 2000, Henry purchased Orinoco Studios in Bermondsey. At this point Milo became the new brand Miloco and the growth of the company took off. Over the next 15 years, Miloco expanded from the original Hoxton studio into an extensive group of partnerships with studio owners/producers including Hugh Padgham, Matt Johnson (The The), and Flood and Alan Moulder.
In recent years, Henry oversaw Miloco’s expansion into various new business areas including Miloco Builds, a studio design and construction company which now has clients including Abbey Road, Paul Epworth, Amazon and SNK Studios; and Miloco Gear, which buys and sells pro audio equipment.
Miloco as a company is a true reflection of Henry’s strength of character. His support of both the staff and the company cannot be emphasised enough. Henry did not run Miloco for commercial gain. Although there were many opportunities to realise his investment, he never did because of his pride in what we have achieved as a company.
We both intend to be able to continue to grow the company as would have been his wish, and will greatly miss his continued guidance and words of wisdom.

Other rewards and opportunities include a slot on the Tradiio Stage at Field Day as well as benefits from Tradiio’s label partnership with Believe and the chance to make a video thanks to Tradiio’s partnership with Radar.
Available on the web and via iOS and Android apps, Tradiio also lets users listen to, and virtually invest in, new artists. The user is able to discover new talent and act as a tastemaker for others, as users themselves do all the curation with no editors involved.
Users that do the best job spotting talent gain credibility and earn virtual coins on the platform, which can be redeemed for rewards such as Field Day tickets, Bleep download store vouchers, AIAIAI headphones and Sonos speakers.
“Tradiio users can build up their credibility by spotting the best up-and-coming talent and be recognised as a tastemaker,” said Paul Benney, UK managing director of Tradiio. “Users get to listen to new artists and invest virtual currency in the ones they consider to be the best.
“It’s a completely different experience than other, more passive music platforms that users don’t really engage with. Tradiio users are influencing the careers of the artists they are listening to, as well as building themselves reputations among their peers, giving them an emotional link to the platform.”
Tradiio is free for users and artists to access through the www.tradiio.com website, on iOS and Android.
“In Portugal, where Tradiio has been established for some time, Universal Music Portugal selects artists from Tradiio’s top 50 chart to distribute worldwide. No other streaming service offers the artist opportunities like this,” said Alvaro Gomez, CEO and co-founder of Tradiio.

Engineer/producer Phill Brown and drummer Martyn Barker sampled a beautiful vintage Hollywood kit that was recorded using a 1970s mic technique using five mics: a mic on the kick, a mic on the snare, two mics surrounding the kit and a mono mic overhead.
The kit comes with a 1967 Ludwig snare and Drumdrops provides articulations for sticks, hotrods and brushes.
Recorded at the world-famous Livingston Studios in London, Drumdrops thinks you will love the kit.
All the usual sample packs will be released in the coming months. Read more about the Vintage Folk Rock Kit here.
