Lots of New Updates at Retreat Recording Studios, Brighton

Posted on February 24, 2014 by ether

retreat recording studio mix room

There has been lots of interesting activity going on down at Brighton’s Retreat Recording Studios, a residential writing and recording facility based in the beautiful village of Ovingdean, just outside Brighton.

First of all the team at Retreat has been working hard to improve the acoustics in live rooms 1 and 2. Meanwhile, the main studio’s control room acoustics have been overhauled using the latest Vicoustic technology to give the space better detail when overdubbing. It also allows clients to mix in the control room if they wish to.

There has been some new equipment added to the main recording studio, too. The control room has benefited from new Genelec monitoring; and we’ve added two new JZ Black Hole microphones to the mic collection and will acquire a third CP12 valve mic shortly

Over in the separate mixing studio, the guys at AudioCircus have been tuning the room as well as adding new subs with crossovers for the midrange monitoring – the results are speaking for themselves with some exceptional mixes now coming out of that room.

Looking to the future, Retreat Recording Studios has some really exciting developments on the horizon, including some extensions to the studio spaces and new accommodation facilities. More on that later – stay tune on the Miloco blog for further updates.

You can view the full equipment spec in the main recording studio at Retreat here.

The MPG Awards – Tonight, Thursday 13 February

Posted on February 13, 2014 by ether

mpg awards 2014
Tonight is MPG Awards night, and we’d like to wish everyone on the shortlists the best of luck.

Special mentions go to Gotham Producers’ Matt Wiggins who has been nominated for the Breakthrough Engineer of the Year Award. Matt’s work with Paul Epworth over the last year has included credits on the latest Paul McCartney album and Adele’s James Bond single, ‘Skyfall’ which has been nominated for Single of the Year.

A shout out to Paul himself who will be hoping for repeat success at the MPGs in the UK Producer of the Year award, a shortlist which he is joined on by our partners over at Battery Studios, Flood and Alan Moulder for their masterful production on Foals’ ‘Holy Fire’. The album which was recorded in Miloco’s Assault and Battery 2 and mixed in Assault and Battery 1 has been nominated for Album of the Year, with the single ‘My Number’ up for Single of the Year. Flood and Alan have also earned a nomination of Mix Engineer of the Year, and Catherine Marks, who recorded the album is on the shortlist for both Engineer of the Year and Breakthrough Engineer of the Year. So there’s potential for huge success over in the Foals camp…

Lastly, the Everything Everything single ‘Kemosabe’ from the band’s second album, which was partly-recorded in Angelic with Mo Hausler and Tom Fuller on engineering duties, is nominated for Single of the Year.

Good luck to all the nominees at the 2014 MPG Awards. We look forward to seeing as many people there as possible.

New Warpaint Album Recorded & Mixed at Miloco Studios

Posted on February 11, 2014 by ether

Four-piece, Warpaint, are back with their second full-length album after three years in the making.

The self-titled record is a familiar continuation of their well-loved trip-hop style, but with a dark twist owing to heavier riffs and production, thanks to the help of super-producer Flood. It’s certainly an intriguing offering and well worth the wait.

Warpaint was part-recorded at Miloco’s Assault and Battery 2 studios by our very own Drew Smith, Cecil Bartlett and Flood. The record was then mixed at Assault and Battery 1 studio by Flood, with the help of Miloco’s John Caitlin and the band.

Clean Bandit Number 1 “Rather Be” – Vocals recorded by Brett Shaw at 123 Studios

Posted on February 6, 2014 by ether

Congratulations to Brett Shaw over at 123 Studios in Shoreditch who has scored his first number one single by recording the vocals on Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” featuring Jess Glynn. Debuting at number one on the UK charts and a non-mover in its second week, “Rather Be” is the fastest selling UK single so far in 2014, and the fastest selling January single since Babylon Zoo’s ‘Spaceman’. Remember that one?

Co-written by Clean Bandit and Jimmy Napes of Disclosure, the track features a compelling mix of deep house and classical music samples, a ‘baroque pop’ for 2014 if you like, or just simply ‘classical-dance’. A simple but very effective foot-tapper that we’ll be hearing for many months to come. Check out the video below…

View Brett Shaw’s CV here. You can find out everything you need to know on Brett’s Shoreditch recording studio, 123 Studios here.

London’s only Vintage EMI Neve Console is now in The Church Recording Studio!

Posted on January 31, 2014 by ether

It has been one hell of a week over at The Church Recording Studios in London. This epic space, which leading UK producer Paul Epworth is reopening in 2014, is being transformed into London’s most exciting new recording studio complex in years, and last weekend we moved into the main recording room a very special piece of kit.

Introducing London’s only vintage EMI Neve console. Comprised of two halves – one which once lived in Abbey Road and recorded hits such as ‘Wish You Were Here’ by Pink Floyd, and the other from the famous Pathe Marconi studio in Paris – this is one hell of a desk. Under the guidance of Neve tech maestro Blake Devitt, we have spent the last seven days commissioning this stunning EMI Neve which has taken centre stage in what will be The Church’s main recording room – The Church Studios 1.
