Engineer & producer James Mellor represented by Miloco

Posted on March 3, 2019 by Georgie Koch

Please help us welcome long-time member of the Miloco family, James Mellor, to the roster of engineers and producers represented by Miloco Studios.

James began his career as the in-house engineer at our partner studio, Liverpool’s The Motor Museumwhere he worked with artists such as Cast, Space, The Fall and Mike Scott while also producing local up-and-coming bands such as Life At The Arcade, Shy Billy and Jo Mary.

After relocating to London in 2017, James joined the Miloco team and began working at a wide variety of London studios, gaining valuable experience of vintage equipment and consoles.

Since then, James has engineered on sessions including Crystal Fighters, Ten Fé, Ama Lou, Slaves and Goldlink, all the while maintaining his passion for working with emerging artists – producing and mixing tracks for Paolo Post Future, Deliah, The Deep and Lilum to name a few.

With his background as a musician, James is able to work with artists to help them achieve their vision in a collaborative, approachable and efficient way.

When James isn’t busy on session, you’ll find him watching the football or scouting out new, exciting talent at local music venues.

The MPG Awards 2019 Wrap Up

Posted on March 1, 2019 by Georgie Koch

The MPG Awards is a highlight on the Miloco calendar each year and 2019 was no different. The team got dolled up and joined our friends and colleagues at West London’s Grosvenor House to celebrate our industry and some of the amazing work that has been done over the past year.

Among the many winners of the night we were especially pleased to see some of the brilliant people we’ve worked with over the past few years grace to stage and accept their awards.

• Earlier in the week, client and friend of Miloco, Skepta, was awarded the 2019 Inspiration Award

• Matt Wiggins (above), who started doing work experience for Miloco before assisting in The Pool and has gone on to producer and engineer for some of the biggest names in the industry, took home the award for Recording Engineer of The Year
• David Wrench (below) won the Miloco-sponsored Mix Engineer of The Year award

• Indie band Everything Everything, who have recorded a few albums with us, won Album Of The Year
• Former owner of Sofa Sound, which was a Miloco partner studio, Hugh Padgham won the Outstanding Contribution to UK Music

Congratulations to all the winners and needless to say we’re already looking forward to The MPG Awards 2020!

Jamie McEvoy joins Miloco’s roster of producers & engineers

Posted on February 24, 2019 by Georgie Koch

Anyone who has worked in our flagship tracking studio, The Pool over the last three years will know Jamie McEvoy. Originally from Ireland, Jamie began his career at Grouse Lodge and Herbert Place studios before moving to London in 2016 to take up residency with Miloco at Ben Hillier’s The Pool.

Over the past three years, Jamie has had the chance to work with and learn from many great producers, including Stephen Street, James Ford, Phill Brown, Cam Blackwood, and of course, Ben Hillier.

Not only that, but he has recorded and mixed on a varied list of projects from the likes of Genghar, Nick Murphy, Simian Mobile Disco, Songhoy Blues, Roy Ayres, Oh Wonder, The Vaccines and Ward Thomas.

Now Jamie joins an impressive roster of producers and engineers represented by Miloco Studios, and available to hire for your session.

As an engineer, he applies his love of depth, distortion and studio experiments in order to pursue exciting, energetic and punchy recordings. Always looking for something unique, he loves nothing more than running organic sounds through odd assortments of guitar pedals or crunching up drums through over driven preamps.

Introducing Nxne Studios

Posted on January 31, 2019 by Georgie Koch

This week we’re pleased to announce that new northeast London studio, NXNE Studios, has joined the Miloco Studios directory.

Housed inside an old sweet factory this is certainly a space to inspire, with just the right vibe and just the right gear to have you feeling like a kid in a candy store. NXNE is spread over one large open space, with every wall and corner is stocked with an array of analogue synthesizers, guitars, drums, percussion, piano and other toys for clients to let their creativity run away with.

Designed with simplicity and ease of use in mine, NXNE’s pain-free patch aims to save you time on connectivity, technical issues and has troubleshooting to near zero.

They say good things come in small packages and NXNE is no exception, stocking both vintage and new state of the art equipment to allow clients to find the right sound every time. This gear collection extends to a vast array of preamps, outboard (including the rare Ursa Major Space Station and DBX Boom Box), Barefoot MM27 monitors that  will give you mind-blowing accuracy of sound in your mix top to bottom and side to side. This is balanced with a pair of trusty Yamaha NS10 to give a more realistic reference for a household user. Other monitors are available upon request but truly these are a winning combination.

It wouldn’t be the quintessential studio vibe without all of this being complimented by Persian rugs, fairy lights, plants and a Chesterfield lounge to create a warm and bohemian setting for you to settle into and feel right at home.

Explore the full studio page to see all NXNE has to offer and get in touch with out office team to enquire about rates and session bookings.

Bulgaria’s Renewsound Studio joins Miloco

Posted on January 22, 2019 by Georgie Koch

We are thrilled to welcome our first Bulgarian partner recording studio, Renewsound Studio. Located in the heart of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, Renewsound is a professional audio recording and mixing studios that was designed and built to the highest standard.

Welcome State Of The Ark to Miloco

Posted on October 31, 2018 by Georgie Koch

Introducing State of The Ark, a boutique vintage recording studio in the leafy south west London borough of Richmond. Originally built for the exclusive use of songwriter and producer Terry Britten, State Of The Ark has opened its doors to the public – and has garnered quite the reputation, hosting the likes if Mumford & Sons, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, London Grammar and more.

The studio comprises one large live room, two medium sized isolation rooms, two amp isolation booths and a control room, centred about a 1960’s 24 channel EMI TG 12345 KMIII Console. All recording areas have line of sight to the control room which makes for easy communication and cueing during live sessions.

Included in the studio is a vast array of valve and early solid state outboard gear, 30+ guitars and basses from the 60’s and 70’s, and two beautiful pianos – a Steinway B grand and a Hammond C3 – as well as the vintage equipment the facility has become known for

The space benefits from plenty of natural light throughout, with skylights in the control room and kitchen area and large floor to ceiling windows in the live room.

For breaks and won time there is a kitchen/dining area upstairs that is fully isolated from the main studio. This is the ideal space  for those seeking a studio that is both private and homely, equipped with the latest technology as well as sought after vintage gear, and home to impressive sounding rooms.

View the full studio page here and get in touch with our bookings team to enquire about rates and sessions.

New Tom Misch video, recorded in The Pool

Posted on October 11, 2018 by Georgie Koch

Music is what we live and breath here at Miloco, but we love mixing it up from time to time and showing the world just how great our rooms look. We’ve had a fair few videos filmed in our studios, and the latest one might be the best yet.

‘It Runs Through Me’ is the new single from UK musician and producer Tom Misch, featuring urban music legends De La Soul. A funky, soulful tune the video certainly matches the vibe, which was filmed in our flagship tracking studio The Pool. The crew certainly made good use of The Pool’s natural retro vibe (and the mirror ball, of course!) to create the ultimate 70s studio setup.

Tom and the gang spent the day in The Pool on September 20 to record the video in a single day shoot, assisted by Jamie McEvoy and shadowed by Cyril Mendel.

Now serving, Soup Studio

Posted on September 25, 2018 by Georgie Koch

Some of you may be looking at these pictures and thinking, “I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this studio before.” And you would be right. After all, a studio housed on a great big red ship is not something you easily forget.

Welcome to the newly re-launched Soup Studio. Formerly known as Lightship95, Soup Studio has taken over the “boat that rocks” with a new name, new team and new gear.

The unmissable east London studio is still moored at Trinity Buoy Wharf, with the studio located in the hull of the boat. There is a 300sq ft purpose built control room that is daylit through four portholes. The control room is based around a fantastic sounding Calrec S2 console, Protools 12 and a selection of outboard. There is a direct line of sight from the control room through to the 520sq ft live room, which is also naturally lit and boasts a high ceiling, classic 80’s finish and excellent acoustics.

The room can easily accommodate a whole band for live tracking; there is an excellent collection of microphones and a great choice of backline including a large range of Fender amps, drums from Slingerland and Rogers, as well as a beautiful red Wurlitzer and a Hammond organ with Leslie. The recording space also includes a large isolation booth and some unique reverb chambers.

When you’re hungry or in need of fresh air, just come up on deck and pop across the drawbridge to the popular American diner, which also looks like something out of a film. At Soup you will also find free parking, and panoramic views of the famous Thames docklands. There aren’t many studios that can boast that!
