Introducing Miloco’s new demo studio, Elektrobank

Posted on August 23, 2018 by Georgie Koch

With an HQ facility that can only house so many studios, it is with great excitement that we announce a brand new studio in our south London Orinoco complex, Elektrobank.

Previously known as ‘The Toyshop’, this is the room where The Chemical Brothers recorded their first few albums in the 90s, the studio is named after one of the hits from their 1997 Dig Your Own Hole album.

Refurbished by our own Miloco Builds team, the room features some their finest acoustic panels, designs and furniture. The room is packed with choice pieces of vintage used gear that’s for sale from Miloco Gear, as well as demo units from our favourite manufacturers, and the latest acoustic products from Miloco Builds. The room can also be hired commercially when available.

We appreciate that buying new gear is a big decision, and that’s where Elektrobank comes in, here to help you wrap your head around vital new kit for your studio before committing to purchase.

Thanks to our team at Miloco Gear, there will be a constantly rotating gear spec in Elektrobank, aimed at giving discerning audio folk an opportunity to put a bit of kit through its paces before committing to buy. Needless to say, all the engineers at HQ are blown away by the gear on offer here, and we’re sure you will be too!

Whilst the spec may change from week to week we will always guarantee a fully loaded Pro Tools rig, an interface, console or monitor controller and a choice of speakers, microphones and mic pres. This makes Elektrobank the perfect demo studio for clients.

Get in touch with our office team to enquire about testing out or purchasing gear, as well as rates and availability to book your session in this state-of-the-art demo studio.

Miloco’s 2018 5-a-side football tournament: recap

Posted on July 30, 2018 by Georgie Koch

That time of year has come and gone again and it will be a long 12 months until we get to strap our boots back on and don our red Miloco jerseys for the annual 5-a-side football tournament. If you’re facing the post-football blues as much as we are, and don’t worry, it didn’t quite ‘come home’ for Team Miloco either, you can re-live all the nail-biting action in the video recap below.

As always, thank you all who came out and participated. It’s such a great event with like-minded people (translation: music fanatics) coming together for a great day of fun and sportsmanship raising money for our charity, the Brighton Tennis Table Club.

NHS Voices is a very special assembly of recording artists and The NHS Choir, who recorded their own rendition of ‘With A Little Help From My Friends‘ to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS!

The NHS Choir are joined by stars and celebs, such as Nile Rodgers and Louisa Johnson, as they try to break the world record for the biggest ever singalong broadcast, The Big NHS Sing along, which aired live on ITV on July 4th, 2018.

Miloco’s own Matt Lawrence was enlisted to work alongside producers Jon Cohen and Timbaland to record the special charity single, recording in various studios across London including our HQ writing studio The Bridge, where this happy snap of Matt and Louisa below was taken.

The NHS is so important to the UK, benefitting millions of its citizens and residents every single year. Please help us support this fantastic service by buying the song on iTunes, or streaming on your favourite service.

In my 20+ years recording I’ve been bowled over my a select group of singers in the studio. Today I added to that list… @Louisa #louisajohnson #nhsvoices #nhs70 #singer?????? ?

Let Sonastério take your breath away

Posted on June 24, 2018 by Georgie Koch

We have the privilege of representing hundreds of the world’s most incredible recording studios, and it’s safe to say few things excite us more than launching a special new studio on our site. This week we want to introduce you to Brazil’s Sonastério Recording Studio.

As well as being state of the art, this studio IS art. Situated in the Minas Gerais mountains, Sonastério was designed as a collaboration between Joao Diniz Architecture and the world-renowned acoustic architecture design firm WSDG (Walters-Storky Design Group), who have worked on many of our partner studios, including The Church.

With sweeping views that will take your breath away, the building was designed to be the most creative and inspiring setting for musicians to record. Sonastério believe music enlightens and so go to great lengths to provide artists a space that fosters excellence and helps guide them in their constant search to let their creative minds shine.

Bringing Joao Diniz and WSDG together, they worked to ensure that every square foot was designed with acoustics in mind, creating the most incredible sound. The 1500sq ft studio has 20 foot high ceilings and is centred around an AWS 924 console, combining classic SSL analogue technology with full DAW control.

The live room features custom ceiling clouds for absorption, a separate iso booth, pro lighting rig for video shoots and impossible to beat views through floor to ceiling glass windows.

The control room, as well as featuring an SSL console, is home to Augspurger Duo8 speakers with 12″ subwoofers, a solid collection of outboard gear, and an impeccable systems integration by Ground Control.

As a destination studio of this level of quality, it is only natural that Sonastério has gorgeous on-site accommodation comprising of three guest bedrooms and five star amenities, which is every bit as good as it looks.

The Horne Section comes to Miloco

Posted on June 4, 2018 by Georgie Koch

We get all kinds of projects come through our doors at Miloco, and through a combination or our spaces, gear and team we’re able to cater for them all!

Recently we had the crew from TV programme The Horne Section join us in The Pool and The Red Room London to work on the music for their comedy variety show.

The Pool’s in house engineer Jamie McEvoy was on hand to engineer the part recorded in The Pool, and was called upon to mix all the live music from the show. Last year Jamie and Dan Moyler between them engineered The Horne Section podcast, and recorded cut away skits from the group’s sold out show at the Palladium, assisted by Ben Sorab and Claude Vause.

The Horne Section are a comedy Jazz band lead by stand up comedian and creator of Taskmaster, Alex Horne. He is joined by a band of trained jazz musicians, including saxophonist Mark Brown (who plays with Robbie Williams) and trumpeter Joe Auckland who is currently touring with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Watch the show, which first aired on May 24th on the Dave network right here.

Miloco Gear Pro Audio Showcase Wrap Up

Posted on May 11, 2018 by Georgie Koch

For anyone who wasn’t able to come to the Miloco Gear Pro Audio showcase last week, make sure you get your tickets for the next one! It was a lot of fun having so many different people, brands and products in one place being so supportive of each other’s work, really something special to be a part of.

First of all, thanks to everyone that did come down, it was great to see you all – old faces and new – as well as a huge thank you to everyone who brought in toys for us to play with and shoot out, and I have to say I was super impressed with a lot of what is being concocted by you. From bit crushing pedals to silky compression, it was all on display.

Congratulations too to the lucky few attendees who walked away a little heavier after winning some new equipment courtesy of Quested, Adam, Focal, Warm, SSL and Audient!

Following on from the success of our bus compressor and microphones shoot outs at the previous event, we decided to take it a step further. This time around we hosted shoot outs of classic and modern pre-amps – hosted by the wizard that is Dax Liniere, and a compressor shoot out featuring kit from all eras of recorded music – hosted by myself.

I’m not often blown away by equipment, but some of the toys we had in the building on the night did just that, the Lisson Grove AR1 is pure magic in a box, but if you’re after something that does the job without asking for a credit, then definitely try out a Manley ELOP! Special shout out to The Pool’s ADL 1500, which stood up against many of the classics.

Dax, I’m waiting for your vote on who edged ahead in mic pre shoot out! Aren’t we all?

Gear shoot outs and general nerdery aside, making my way through the Miloco HQ corridors there was something to grab my attention in every corner, and I’m not just speaking about the delicious beverages – we had voodoo masters Trinov showing off their incredible room adjustment/treatment machine, Quested, Adam, Focal & old friends Augspurger making everyone dance with their new sound blasting machines, Sony with their new hotly awaited C100, and countless other toys form Eventide, Audient, Focusrite and many many others.

It was a real candy store for anyone even vaguely interested in recorded music and tech.

One of my favourites of the night were the new Quested Q212 Free Standing monitors, they sound incredible, and for those who like it LOUD, they had the power to make The Pool studio shake.

Speaking of speakers, Oisin Lunny hosted a great shoot out of sub £2k monitors from The Red Room, in the running were Unity Audio, Focal, Adam and PMC. These things sound a lot better than the price would indicate, best you hear them for yourselves to believe them I’d say!

But I’d be mad if I forgot one of the local favourites who brought along their magic little mixing machine, the AWS 948, by none other than Solid State Logic. And yes, it does stand up to the consoles we all know and love and manages to take it a step further with some tasty modern features.

For anyone looking to get their hands on one, we’ll be holding one in our HQ for the next little bit, so get in touch with bookings if you’re interested bookings@miloco.co.uk

If I could write about everything going on on the night I’d need to purchase a lot more drive space, but rather than fill the internet with noise, I’ll leave you with this: get your tickets to the next event and come and experience it for yourself. It’s a blast and educational, who’d have thought?

After resuscitating the infamous Miloco 5-a-side football tournament last year, we are coming back strong in 2018, bigger and better than ever!

Registration are now open for what is sure to be the fiercest and most prestigious football tournament of the year for the UK music industry. Taking place on the 19th of July, at Play Football White City in West London’s Shepherd’s Bush, this year’s competition has a lot to live up to if last year’s day is anything to go by. You can read the full match report here.

Teams can sign up for £50, with all proceeds going to charity – we’ll be back with more news on that when it’s in. As per usual there will be food, drinks, music, great company. And of course, football.

There will be the usual prizes for first, second and first, but really are those even important? We will be doling out awards for Best Team Name (the punnier the better), Best Team Kit and Best Goal Celebration.

So there you have it, get recruiting, get practising, get brainstorming and we’ll see you in July!

Welcome our first Polish Studio, Tall Pine Records

Posted on April 29, 2018 by Georgie Koch

With partner studios all over the world, we are please to present our first Polish partner studio, Tall Pine Records.

Located near the city of Gdansk, Tall Pine is a purpose built studio consisting of two live rooms a a combined 100 metres squared, a control room, iso room, and lounge facilities.

The main live room has lovey 7m tall ceilings, but the curtains and moveable absorbers give it the ability to shorten the reverb time and create diffusion. The size of the room means Tall Pine can accommodate every size project, from small bands up to chamber orchestras, and can create complete separation using the smaller live room. This room is on the floor above but looks down onto the main room through large windows allowing full visibility.

Tall Pine’s control room is centred about an SSL 4048G+ console, the only one if its kind in Poland, once lived in the UK and was resorted and serviced by Peter Higgs. The control room also features a Protools HD rig, a 24 channel Studier 827, as well as a selection of classic mics, unique backline, outboard and more.

The team at Tall Pine can cater for any type of project or genre, providing the optimal conditions for clients to work in each room. Explore the full studio page and contact our bookings team for rates and bookings.
