Welcome Yellow Shark Recording Studio

Posted on March 26, 2017 by Georgie Koch

Our ever-growing directory of partner studios has been made even bigger this week with the addition of Yellow Shark Recording Studio! Located in Cheltenham in the charming Cotswolds region north west of London, Yellow Shark is a world-class recording facility owned by Jeremy Drew, who named the studio after Frank Zappa’s final album The Yellowshark.

Yellow Shark comprises of two large live rooms, two small booths and a large control room, each room having its own special uses. The main live room is large and with low absorption generates a fairly live sound whilst remaining controlled, which is great for vocalists and acoustic instruments. The second live room and the booths are covered in absorption, creating a dead environment perfect for recording guitars and (depending on the sound you’re after) is also ideal for drums. Take a look through the virtual floor plan to get more of a feel for the space here.

While you’re at it, we recommend you browse through the extensive equipment list for all the gear goods they have in store, including an unusually wide variety of very fine instruments such as an original Hammond B3 with Leslie!

The control room, this room is centered around a Soundtracs Jade-S 48 Channel recording and mixing console,  which stopped being produced in 1996 and is renowned for its warm sound, and ‘SSL’ like features. The team at Yellow Shark have gone to great lengths to ensure the monitoring is perfect, with wall mounted ATC 200ASLs, ATC SCM20, Focal Twins BE and Yamaha NS10’s. The combination of all these will give you the perfect sound and allow you to pick up every detail when recording and mixing.

It’s not all about the sound though! The team at Yellow Shark know how important the look and feel of a studio is for clients, and so the interior has been designed to produce a creative vibe and beautiful ambience without compromising on sound quality, with dimming lights in every room to set the mood.

Regardless of how big or small your recording project, from recording singles to albums, radio to corporate voice overs, the team at Yellow Shark can cater to your needs and budget. With an unmatched passion for sound, Yellow Shark offers  the best technology at all stages of the recording process, and a team of experienced engineers who have worked with some of the finest musicians, producers and companies in the industry.

Janette Mason’s Red Alert

Posted on March 13, 2017 by Georgie Koch

After our saga of pianos in Livingston 1 last year, we are so happy that the Steinway Model B grand piano we waited so anxiously for is performing as well, if not better, than we hoped!

Someone who wholeheartedly agrees with us is London-based pianist, composer, arranger and producer Janette Mason! A well known figure in the British jazz scene, we hosted Janette and her new jazz trio Red Alert in Livingston 1 this past January

The trio, comprising of Janette on piano, Jack Pollitt on drums and Tom Mason on bass, spent two days in Studio 1 recording promotional videos for their new project, which they are can the middle of crowdfunding.

“The Steinway is sounding fantastic,” says Janette. “The results we achieved both visually and sonically are fantastic!”

With a background as prestigious as hers, we’re inclined to take her word on these things! Janette was nominated for a Parliamentary jazz award for her second trio album Alien Left Hand and she reached the Grammy ballot for The Live Smoke Sessions with Lea DeLaria for which she took on the dual roles of arranger and producer.

She has written music for Film and TV including the score for the award winning Ruby Blue, starring Bob Hoskins and has had music placed in countless TV programs from The Drew Carey Show to Sex and the City. As a performer she’s worked with Oasis, Pulp, Robert Wyatt and collaborated with many high profile jazz musicians including Ian Shaw and Gwyneth Herbert.

This new work is inspired by Janette’s passionate belief that jazz needs to constantly evolve to attract a younger, more diverse audience. Several of the tracks are a direct musical response to the political and social challenges now facing us all – hence the title Red Alert.

The upcoming Red Alter project will be released on Dot Time Records. For all enquiries, please contact Janette’s management at khadiee@chapelstmusic.com.

To support the new Red Alert project, you can contribute to their crowdfunding campaign which runs from March 1-31, 2017 here.

Paul Epworth wins MPG Producer Of The Year

Posted on February 17, 2017 by Georgie Koch

Not one, not two, but FOUR. That’s the number of times Paul Epworth has now taken out the top honour of Producer of The Year at the annual MPG Awards.

The 2017 awards ceremony took place earlier this week at London’s Grosvenor Place saw the music industry’s best and brightest gather to honour some of the best work to come out of the UK this year.

Having won Producer of The Year in 2010, 2013 and 2015, Paul was nominated this time around for his work with Adele, The Stone Roses and Usher, at his north London studio complex The Church Studios.

Always humble, on accepting the award Paul said, “I’m a dreadful musician…but I’m not afraid to try.” It could be this attitude that has allowed him to work with some of the world’s biggest artists, such as Florence + The Machine, U2, Kanye West, Lorde, Maroon 5, and many more. Explore his full discography here.

As a mentor to many young producers and engineers, Paul shared the limelight on the night with his engineer, Miloco’s Matt Wiggins.
