On January 23, the31st NAMM TEC Awards were held in Anaheim California. An awards ceremony dedicated to celebrating the technical and creative achievements of artists, producers, studios, and manufacturers, there are 31 different categories honouring the best in pro audio and sound production.
We were very excited to learn that Paul Epworth‘s The Church Studios was nominated alongside Walter-Storyk Design Group (WSDG) and Miloco Services in the Studio Design Project category. They were nominated alongside various other studios and design companies from around the world, including another WSDG project, Dream Asylum in Florida, USA.
WSDG and The Church came together with Miloco Services to coordinate the project, introducing a writing room, restructuring the studios and eliminating sound leakage and upgrading the monitoring. A whole new interior was designed with a white colour palette that would nicely offset the sophisticated lighting system, which allows the lighting to be customised to suit any mood, controlled by a smartphone app. Read more about the project on the WSDG website here.
Congratulations to Paul and the teams at WSDG, The Church and Miloco Services!
Miloco’s global studio directory seems to be growing bigger as each week goes by, and this one is no exception thanks to the addition of Oxygen Recording Studios. Located on a tranquil hillside in the Piemonte region of northern Italy, Oxygen is a private residential recording studio created by producer/guitarist/owner Paride Lanciani.
The studio focuses on vintage and analog gear, with the heart of the studio formed by a really cool restored vintage Ghunter Loof console, which was produced in limited numbers from 1975-83. A Pro Tools Mix Plus digital system is already installed, and a Pro Tools HD rig can be hired additionally, but Oxygen’s signature sound is characterised by an AMPEX track tape recorder and ATR track machine for putting mixes down. An array of other vintage pieces of equipment and instruments are housed around the three recording spaces and control room, which are separated by thick glass doors.
Oxygen offers on site year-round accommodation for up to six in a converted greenhouse in the garden, a short distance from the main house. It comes with a comfortable and large lounge with TV, hifi stereo, games, and a fully stocked gourmet kitchen, as well as a lovely garden – perfect for relaxing and al fresco dining during the warmer months. Even the decor gives off a vintage rock ‘n roll vibe we’re sure clients will love!
Paride and his team have worked to create a warm and inviting studio setting, where clients can be inspired, record but also relax. They will be able to record digitally or on tape, taking full advantage of the classic analogue sound Oxygen is known for. Check out Oxygen Recording Studios’ page here.

Miloco is please to announce our first partner studio in Argentina with Sonoramica. Located in the heart of Argentina near the city of Cordoba, Sonoramica is a secluded residential recording facility housed on 34 acres of the Traslasierra Valley. Surrounded by so much rugged natural beauty, the modern minimalist designed studio takes full advantage of its environment, featuring large windows in all recording rooms, bathing the studio in natural light and showcasing the breathtaking views.
The newly built studio is comprised of three large recording rooms and a comfortable control room. One of the studio’s distinctive features is the visibility between all live rooms and control room, meaning artists can use the rooms separately or jointly, creating one massive live space of almost 2,200 sq ft. Each of the A, B and C rooms have been designed with their own unique acoustics to be able to achieve any desired sound, and the control room with acoustic floating walls and floors. As an artist owned and run studio, they have kept the need of the artist in mind and have stocked the studio with a wide range of analogue and digital gear, top quality mics and backline.
The onsite accommodation sits 660 feet away from the main studio and is currently under construction, but it is to consist of a lounge area, dining room, kitchen and bedrooms that will accommodate 6-8 people at one time and is included as part of the studio service.
Comfortable yet affordable, Sonoramica is a great destination studio for artists bunker down in to record their projects but should come with a disclaimer…
Warning: this view is highly distracting/inspiring, gaze at your own risk.

New year, new gear! We didn’t mean for that to rhyme, promise.
The famous north London studio, Livingston 1, underwent a complete refurb in 2012 and like all our studios, benefits from constant upgrades and additions to instruments, gear and backline. This week has seen the addition of some special new pieces of gear to the racks, so all you music geeks out there (that includes us), feast your eyes on these…
Here we have the Urei 1178 stereo FET compressor, the stereo equivalent of the legendary Urei 1176. This is a fantastic overhead compressor that adds some real body to the room.
Underneath the Urei we have the EAR 600 mono compressor. This baby was hand built by Tim de Paravicini, it’s a similar design to the very rare (and expensive) Fairchild 660.
Next up is the 5 Calrec PQ 1161-02 mic preamps and EQs. Each module is a discrete mic pre and 3-band EQ and pass filters, with identical EQ points to a Neve 33122.
These are a pair of EAR 822Q EQs. Also hand built by Tim de Paravicini, they’re passive mono valve EQs based on the Pultec design. These guys are designed to be highly flexible, making them useful in any application.
Last but certainly not least is a Roland Juno-106 analog polysynth. This is a very popular analog synth and widely used due to its amazing sound a simple programming systems, and was one of the first Roland midi-equipped synthesisers.
All this added to an already impressive gear spec (check the full list here) truly makes Livingston one of the best tracking rooms in London and the birthplace of recordings by Hozier, The 1975, Björk and many more.

2015 was a great year in the Miloco and partner studios here in London and around the world. We enjoyed working with every artist and on every project that has come through our doors, but we couldn’t let the year disappear completely without highlighting some of the extra special moments as voted by our staff in the Miloco 2015 Year In Review.
Foals record What Went Down at La Fabrique in Paris
Early in the year the Oxfordshire five-piece Foals travelled down to the south of France to record their fourth album, What Went Down, at the amazing residential recording studio, La Fabrique. Teaming up with producer James Ford and engineer Jimmy Robinson, the album was then mixed by Alan Moulder at Assault & Battery 1. Taking on some darker themes, but also revealing the band’s most beautiful pop songs, the album was a great success and received well by fans and critics alike.
Adele works on 25 at The Church
You can’t talk about the year in music without mentioning Adele and her chart-topping album 25. Recorded at various studios around the UK, Britain’s Queen Of Pop returned to The Church in north London where she has recorded much of her earlier work. She worked once again with serial collaborator and The Church’s driving force, Paul Epworth, on two of the album’s eleven tracks. The beautiful studio was also showcased in the video for her second single, ‘When We Were Young’.
Stephen Street works on Blur comeback
In February Miloco partner Stephen Street revealed he was involved in the making of Blur‘s comeback album – their first in 16 years – at a press conference hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. The album was recorded and produced by Markus Dravs in The Pool and mostly mixed by Craig Silvey at Toast. It has since appeared in almost every notable ‘Best Albums of 2015’ list.
Wolf Alice record My Love Is Cool at Livingston 1 with Mike Crossey
British four-piece Wolf Alice recorded their debut album My Love Is Cool in Livingston 1 with Gotham producer Mike Crossey in London’s Livingston Studio 1. The album was released mid 2015 and quickly climbed the charts, earning the band nominations for the 2015 Mercury Prize, 2016 NME Awards and 2016 GRAMMYs.
Everything Everything record Get To Heaven at Angelic Studios
Another amazing album to be recorded in a Miloco studio this year was Everything Everything‘s Get To Heaven. Once again teaming up with engineer and friend, Tom Fuller, alongside producer Stuart Price the album was largely recorded at Angelic Studios where the band had also recorded their 2013 sophomore album Arc.
Bring Me The Horizon record That’s The Spirit at Black Rock
The stunning Black Rock Studios in Santorini played home to Bring Me The Horizon for two months while they recorded their fifth studio album That’s The Spirit. Miloco-managed engineer Al Groves holed up with the band to record the project in the luxurious studio – check out band member Jordan Fish talk about the band’s experience recording here.

Matt, who has previously worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Adele and Foster The People, won Studio Engineer of The Year, while Riley took home the Rising Star Award following his excellent work with Florence + The Machine, Lianne La Havas and Nadine Shah.
Bastille record ‘Hangin’ at The Pool with Mark Crew and Jon Sagis
In September Bastille released a new song ‘Hangin” which featured on the FIFA ’16 game soundtrack, and is slated to be on their upcoming LP. Songwriter, producer and mixer Mark Crew recorded the song at The Pool earlier in 2015 with engineer Jonathan Sagis, who is managed by Miloco.
Launch of The Red Room London
In December 2015, after weeks of preparation and keeping things hush hush, Miloco launched the brand new mix room The Red Room London. In collaboration with Swiss mix engineer Philippe Weiss the room was completely refurbished in Miloco’s Bermondsey HQ, getting a new 56 Channel SSL G+ Console, new monitors and outboard and a whole lot more. It’s now fully up and running and is sounding incredible!
The new year brings a new lease on life, and now it could bring you a new lease on a studio! One of our London long term let studios, The Yard in Highbury & Islington is available in 2016.
The Yard is conveniently located next to Highbury and Islington tube station and is a great space for producers, writers and artists/bands to set up camp to work on their albums. It has a booth, air conditioning and alarm system, comes with cleaning 5 days a week, internet and TV. There is also a kitchen and rec room shared with other rooms in the building.
