The Bridge 2.0

Posted on October 31, 2016 by Georgie Koch

We are very excited to reveal that we have recently completed a cosmetic, acoustic and equipment upgrade in our flagship Orinoco Complex writing studio, The Bridge, in London’s SE1.

At the centre of the room is a brand new 24 channel Audient ASP8024 Heritage Edition console. The Audient console is a great console for the writing room, offering clean sound with a retro touch and plenty of routing flexibility. Miloco Gear will be demoing the new Audient console to prospective clients.

We want to say a big thanks to Audient for the help in installing this beauty of a console. On top of the console we have also improved the monitoring with a significant upgrade. Firstly, we added bass absorption in the rear and front of the room. This has helped deaden the control room but also tightened up the bottom end response.

Just to make sure that the sound is truly great in there, we have installed a pair of Augspurger Solo-12 mid range monitors with two 12” subs. Like all the Augspurger speakers we have installed in many of our rooms, they sound incredible! They really have perfect stereo imaging, plenty of power and accurate response. Once again these can be demod with an option to purchase through Miloco Gear.

Finally, a Miloco room would not be complete without our signature Hue lighting system. You can control the lighting of The Bridge to suit your mood, and all from your phone. Any colour, any brightness, with endless combinations to choose from!

We didn’t think this writing room could get any better, but it did! Book now or come and check it out by calling +44 (0) 207 232 0008 or emailing bookings@miloco.co.uk

Miloco welcomes The Cold Stores

Posted on October 15, 2016 by Georgie Koch

Miloco has welcomed another fabulous location to our directory of UK recording studios this week with The Cold Stores.

The family-run studio is a state of the art writing, recording and rehearsal complex located in the heart of the Kent countryside. Comprised of Studios A and B, Studio A has a large live room, drum room, and is complete with control room and a vocal/live booth. It can comfortably cater for large bands, choirs and small orchestras. Studio B has a smaller live room, control room and vocal booth, perfect for recording small bands. The complex also features a large recreation room and a modern kitchen for artists to take a break and relax between takes.

Owners Clive and Sue Thomas acquired the former apple store and went to great lengths to design and build the fully floating, acoustically treated studio complex inside, and recruit a fantastic young team of talented engineers and producers for recording and mixing.

Located just 40 minutes from London it is the perfect recording retreat within easy reach of the city, where clients can relax and focus on their projects. Secure on site parking and disability access/toilet facilities make The Cold Stores easily accessible for all clients.

The meticulous attention to detail has resulted in a fantastic family run studio complex which takes pride in producing impeccable quality recording and providing top of the line services, which includes equipment hire and catering, and can be arranged at an extra cost.

Though a relatively young studio, The Cold Stores has already had the pleasure of hosting artists such as Jeff Beck, Pino Palladino and Olly Murs to record.

Prince Fatty Masterclass

Posted on October 4, 2016 by Georgie Koch

Long-time friend of Miloco Studios and our sister company Drumdrops, Mike Pelanconi (aka Prince Fatty) is set to host a very special Dub Masterclass this Friday (October 7, 2016) at Point Blank Music School exclusively for their students.

Mike, who has previously worked with the likes of Lilly Allen, A Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde and Gregory Isaacs, might be know to some of you for his work on Drumdrops’ dub album release, Prince Fatty Horseman, In A Saturday Night Style Vol 1.

As an experiences sound engineer and music producer, Mike will be  imparting his extensive knowledge of dub in a 90 minute workshop at the school’s all new studio facility on Orsman Road in London.

Whilst the masterclass itself focuses around dub, this event will prove invaluable for all production students looking to enhance their production knowledge and skills, with the session exploring some key mixing and effects techniques that can be utilised across many different genres.

If you are, or happen to know, a student at Point Blank then check out the details below and email louise@pointblanklondon.com confirming your current course to secure your place. Please note that this workshop is limited to 30 places and is based on a first come, first serve basis.

Prince Fatty Dub Workshop – ‘More Hifi Less Wifi’

This session promises to be a historical journey into dub and reggae recording techniques, from the early 4 track tape recordings of the 60s through to the modern day. With Prince Fatty treating us to a vinyl excursion into some dub legends including King Tubby, Lee Perry and Scientist, this session will be a unmissable opportunity to gain some invaluable knowledge and proven studio techniques to put to use in your productions.

Attendees to the workshop can expect a deep technical workout, with Fatty diving into the analog process behind dub FX and mixing techniques, demonstrating the difference in sound between digital delays and tape echoes, spring reverbs and filters. Students will be given a detailed insight into how these much-used effects can be used to best impact within electronic music, whether in the studio or on stage.

Summerfield Studios keeps it running hot

Posted on September 19, 2016 by Georgie Koch

Summer is clearly the favourite time of year for our Birmingham partner studio Summerfield Studios, who have recently undergone a refurbishment, including the installation of a brand new console!

Summerfield refurbished the lounge and diner area for artists to be even more comfortable during sessions. But we’re most excited about the new console in the control room.

The desk is SSL 4040G series with 292 pink EQ modules. It was fully restored to a very high standard after its arrival from Studio 150 Amsterdam. It’s only ever had one previous owner since it was purchased in 1989, and has a great pop history with hit albums recorded by Paul Weller and Def Leopard, Studio 150 and Adrenalize respectively.

It’s a 40 channel frame with 40 G series channels loaded, balanced buss and left hand on board patch. In its refurbishment the desk was toothbrush cleaned, had a full recap, switched replaced and cosmetics re-done where needed – we could go on for ages!

Check out Summerfield Studios and their full equipment spec, including their new SSL console, here!

Skepta wins Mercury Prize for his Miloco-mixed ‘Konnichiwa’!

Posted on September 18, 2016 by Georgie Koch

King of UK grime, Skepta, has taken out the 2016 Mercury Prize for his chart-topping album Konnichiwa, beating out the late David Bowie’s Black Star, ANOHNI’s Hopelessness, and more. Accepting the award on stage amongst family and friends, a visibly humbled Skepta (real name Joseph Adenuga), gave many shoutouts to the people who had a part in the album, including Miloco’s Jake Gordon and partner studio Angelic Studios.

Jake bunkered down with Skepta and his crew at residential studio Angelic for the recording of the album, before joining them in The Red Room London to mix eight of the album’s tracks. Fellow Miloco engineer Darren Jones was also involved in the album, mixing one of the album’s singles ‘Ladies Hit Squad‘.

Watch Skepta accept his Mercury Prize below, and click here to read more about the recording and mixing of Konnichiwa at Miloco.

The Comet Is Coming nominated for Mercury Prize

Posted on September 14, 2016 by Georgie Koch

London-based trio The Comet Is Coming (pictured, above), who make their own unique brand of jazz, electronica, funk and psychedelic rock are in the running to win the 2016 Mercury Prize, which will be announced this evening. Their debut studio album Channel The Spirits (pictured, below) was completed at Miloco partner studio Optimum Mastering.

Comprised of members of Soccer96 and Sons Of Kemet, The Comet pick up from where the great Sun-Ra left off, adding smouldering electronics to a heady mix of afrobeat and experimental jazz.

While the themes might be intergalactic, the groove is definitely rooted to the dancefloor, as shown on tracks like Star Furnace and Neon Baby.

Channel The Spirits is particularly suited to the album format as a round trip through the cosmos with a clearly defined start and end. Alpha and Omega.

As such it has been recognised by The Mercury Prize committee with a nomination for best album of 2016. Optimum Mastering are very proud to have contributed and we wish everyone involved all the best for tonight’s awards. Congratulations to all projects and artists nominated!

Posted on September 11, 2016 by Georgie Koch

In November Music Business Worldwide (MBW) are hosting their prestigious A&R Awards at London’s Abbey Road Studios. The UK-focused awards are made up of a talented mix of independent and major professionals across labels, management and publishing. The awards, which are divided into three category groups, will be judged on a combination of commercial, critical and creative achievement.

We are so pleased that various artists, producers and musicians who have worked with or in Miloco Studios over the past year have been recognised for their musical achievements with a nomination.

Lapsley – The Breaking Artist Award
Lapsley completed her debut album Long Way Home in Livingston 1

Michael Kiwanuka – The Breakthrough Artist Award
Michael’s Love & Hate was part written or recorded in Livingston 1 and the (now closed) The Square, including the hugely successful single ‘Black Man In A White World’

Tom Odell – The Breakthrough Artist Award
Tom’s second studio album, Wrong Crowd, was part recorded in Miloco’s The Pool and Assault & Battery 2 studios

Two of the nominees in the Producer Of The Year category are Miloco partners Mike Crossey and Paul Epworth. Mike is Miloco’s partner in the Livingston Studios Complex, and is the man behind albums from The 1975, Wolf Alice, Jake Bugg and many more. Paul Epworth owns the world-renowned The Church Studios, which are managed by Miloco, and has produced the likes of Florence + The Machine, Adele, U2 and FKA Twigs.

These names are in addition to the many A&Rs, management companies and record labels that we have the pleasure of working with every day. We wish them all the best of luck!

Tradiio: Bridging the gap between artists & fans

Posted on August 23, 2016 by Georgie Koch

One of the many reasons we love what we do here at Miloco is that we get the opportunity to work with a huge range of  artists and organisations that help and/or make the music we know and love. We’ve had the good fortune of working with the great people over at music streaming and discovery platform Tradiio, partnering with them to provide free studio time for their competition winners, such as Thundersuckle and Stella Talpo (pictured).

Tradiio have been connecting musicians with fans for years through their innovative app, but have recently taken it up a notch. Knowing how hard it is for artists to earn money from streaming, and given the decline in physical and download purchases, Tradiio stepped in to help artists access new revenue streams through crowdfunding. By going direct-to-fan Tradiio enables fans to not only discover, but subscribe directly to their favourite artists with small monthly payments.

Unlike traditional streaming services, fans that subscribe to and support their favourite artists are of course able to access the music, but are also provided with exclusive releases, behind the scenes content, unique experiences, and more.

Speaking on the benefits for Tradiio artists, CEO Álvaro Gomez says,  “Tradiio started with a clear goal to enable artists to extract value from their music. Now, just after a few days with this feature, we’re already seeing artists earning in excess of $500 per month.”

He could be referring to Portuguese singer-songwriter Surma, who is earning upwards of $500 per month, offering backstage festival tickets and exclusive ‘subscriber only’ tracks to fans. Or perhaps he was thinking of LA-based electronic producer Ark Patrol, who is generating $200 per month in exchange for custom ring tones, Skype calls and production tutorials. And these are just two examples!

To learn more about Tradiio, watch the video below. And whether you’re an artist or a fan, do yourself a favour – sign up and create an account right here: http://tradi.io/join-now

New long-term let studios available

Posted on July 18, 2016 by Georgie Koch

Miloco is lucky enough to have a host of fantastic long term let studios, which are constantly in such high demand that we only have two locations that have recently become available to lease – but they won’t stay unoccupied for long!

The Yard (pictured above) is conveniently located next to Highbury and Islington tube station and is a great space for producers, writers and artists/bands to set up camp to work on projects. The studio is fitted out with a booth, air conditioning and alarm system, and also comes with cleaning five days a week, internet and TV.

There’s also a kitchen and rec room shared with other rooms in the building for well-deserved down time! The studio is hired without equipment, and will be available from mid August, 2016.

Limehouse (pictured above) is part of a recently refurbished development conveniently located in E1 in vibrant east London, and will be available from August 19th. This is a single, daylit acoustically treated room, perfect for a music producer, writer, programmer, composer or artist to have a space to call their own.

It benefits from 24 hour access, 24 hour security, storage and comes with internet and electricity included. And the best part – there are no issues with making noise around the clock!

For all enquiries, please contact our bookings team at bookings@miloco.co.uk or call on +44 (0) 20 7232 8000
